Introduction of facility of automatic credit of PLI/ RPLI monthly premium from PO S.B account

Sub: Introduction of facility of automatic credit of PLI/ RPLI monthly premium from savings account of insured persons.

   In the last few years, there has been massive expansion of Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). However, it has been noticed that a number of policies particularly in RPLI lapse after a while. One of the reasons for lapsation is absence of convenient ways of depositing premia of the policy(ies). As such, it was under consideration of the Department to provide facility of automatic deduction of premia from Savings Account so that (i) the policy holder(s) need not have to visit Post Office every month for depositing premia of his PLI/ RPLI policy and (ii) lapsation of PLI/ RPLI policies gets reduced.

2. The competent authority has now approved the proposal for providing the facility to the policy holder of PLI and RPLI to get premium deposited/ credited by deduction of the same directly from his Savings Account standing in Post Offices. However, this facility can be opted by only those policy holders of PLI and RPLI whose Savings Accounts are maintained in the Departmental Post Offices (GPOs, HOs, MDGs or SOs).

3. It is requested to kindly take necessary action for implementation of aforesaid scheme and wide publicity may also be given for this scheme through various publicity channels.

4. Accounting and operating procedure for automatic transfer of premium of PLI/ RPLI from Savings Accounts of the policy holder is enclosed for information and action accordingly.

5. It is further informed that till the provisions are made in the software, automatic credit of PLI/ RPLI monthly premium by deduction from savings account of the policy holder will have to be done manually.

Dte has requested the outsourced agency to print 10 lacs OMR kits for sale throughout India thro selected POs. Due to huge sale of forms, it is difficult to print within short period. Hence Dte is decided to upload the forms in www.indiapost.gov.in so as to download by the applicants.
Online application kits will be available in www.indiapost.gov.in from 03.09.12 to 25.09.12 only.
Those applied thro OMR kits need not apply again.
Fees :
Cost of Application form - Rs.50
Exam fee – Rs.200. Female, SC, ST & PH applicants are exempted, however they should pay Rs.50.
Total Rs.250 should be paid under Unclassified Receipts thro any POs and attach Original alongwith the Application form. Applicants can keep Xerox copies.

Post office agent cons depositors, arrested in Tiruvottiyur

A 55-year-old post office agent, who allegedly cheated depositors to the tune of Rs. 50 lakh and more, was arrested by the police in Tiruvottiyur on Sunday afternoon. The woman was allegedly involved in the crime for two years.
According to the police, Amrithammal (55), wife of Narayanan, lives in Kalaignar Nagar in Tiruvottiyur. She became a licensed post office agent in 1987.
Her job involved persuading people to open fixed and recurring deposit accounts in the post office. Being a resident of Tiruvottiyur, she used to work outside the local post office.
“As she had been an agent for nearly 25 years, people trusted her and deposited money in the post office,” said V. Sampath, crime inspector at the Tiruvottiyur police station.
He said that Amrithammal would take care of all the formalities for starting an account. “She would retain their passbooks and the interest used to reach their bank accounts regularly. In the case of recurring deposit account holders, she collected the money and deposited it in their bank accounts,” said Mr. Sampath.
Over the past few years, she had stopped depositing money in the recurring deposit accounts.
“She used to do it for account holders who had over Rs. 5,000 as their recurring deposit amount. For fixed deposit account holders, she would draw the money after getting the customers’ signature on the withdrawal slip. She had assured them that she would return the money, but she did not,” said Mr. Sampath.
A retired person Subramani had invested his retirement settlement of Rs. 7 lakh in the post office. “The amount matured in 2010, but he did not receive it. He lodged a complaint, and based on that we arrested Amrithammal,” said the inspector.
During interrogation, Amrithammal had allegedly said she had used the money for construction of a house. “It was impossible to recover the money. She has been remanded to custody. Her husband and son are absconding,” said Mr. Sampath.
Police said depositors have to exercise caution when depositing money through agents. “It is better to ask for the receipt and have the passbook with yourself,” Mr. Sampath said.
